Last month I completed a couple of new songs for my project called Memory Palace. The music for this project is primarily created for licensing (film, tv, advertising, podcasts, etc.), but it’s also a conduit for me to explore control and lack of control in the creative process. Each piece is very much handcrafted with every note edited from source recordings and placed just so. The magic comes, as it does with any project I work on, from the way this control always breaks down and something unintended pokes its head through. I’d say this is actually what I’m waiting for the whole time I’m working. I’ve learned that I can’t stop myself from endeavoring from a place of control, nor do I think it needs to stop, it’s a vital part of creating things, but I have learned to be patient in the process of making things, to wait for the wild parts to show themselves. Often, control is fear and scarcity, while the wild parts are abundance.
